LO 1: Task 2
Form | This advert shows a gorilla playing the drums, as this is unlikely to be seen, this advert is in unrealistic form. |
Style | This advert is humorous as they have chosen an animal that is considered a humorous looking, practicing a serious activity in a very serious and intense manner. |
Codes And Conventions | Camera Angles And Shots: As the advert opens it pans to an extreme close-up of the gorilla, then slowly zooms out to a close-up shot and switches back and forth with the extreme and close-up shot for 10 more seconds. As the music climaxes the camera zooms out and the camera angle reveals the drum set in a medium shot, only a few seconds before the gorilla starts playing it. These camera shots and angles are done this way to give the advert a much more serious and intense feel, which adds to the humour of the advert as it builds irony. Iconography: The imagery of this advert is done in a way to match the product, though the storyline or activity in the advert has no relation to the product, you can recognise that the advert is advertising Cadbury chocolate, because of the iconic purple in the background and brightly coloured setting. Editing: There is not a lot of editing in this advert as it’s supposed to look funny but intense and dramatic and too much editing would distract this tone. Lighting: The lighting in this advert is bright, to give the advert a more light and happy humorous look, and to compliment the purple background. Sound: There is no diegetic sound in the entire advert, this builds helps the audience to wonder and concentrate more on what the gorilla will do next. Music: The music that is used in this advert has two different tones, it starts of quiet and intense and then it becomes lively and upbeat, which matches the actions of the gorilla. |
Computer Graphics | They have used special effects in order to make the gorilla’s facial expression and movement to match the intensive mood and action and also to make the gorilla look likes its playing the drums along the music. |
Techniques | The main objective of this advert seems to have been, trying to set the advert apart from other chocolate adverts and really making it memorable, they have achieved this very well as they have not included the actual product its self, like other chocolate adverts, and rather than making it slow and seductive (as other chocolate adverts are) they have made it upbeat, funny and random. |
Characteristics Of Products or Services | There are no special benefits that are offered with this product in this advert, but that seems very unnecessary as it’s such a globally popular brand, which means such elements as the purple colour and logo makes the advert look familiar and recognisable. Most Cadbury adverts are strange and unrelated to the product which is what makes them stand out from other advert. |
This advert is created in realistic form, it gritty and urban, but glamourized at the same time. |
This advert is supposed to be realistic and stylised in an urban manner, which made it a little dramatic. But the children in the advert give it a humorous feel. |

Iconography: The iconography in this advert matches the product being advertised, it’s down to earth and urban styled, from the ghetto graffiti filled ally-way to the cracked windows and dark lighting, which is done to attracted their target audience. Editing: They have used basic editing effect like slow motion, fast motion, fast panning and added friction sparks. These effects are only used when 50 Cent is working out in the trainers, this is done to glamourize the trainers and make them look super-efficient. Lighting: The lighting in this advert and dark and earthy, which makes it suit the adverts tone and visual image. Sound: In this advert the diegetic sound consists of the sounds you would find in the area such as traffic and moving cars, wind and leaking water and there is also dialogue, these sounds put emphasis and add and realism to the urban style Music: The music used in this advert is 50 cent’s song, which is used as he stars in the advert and also gets attention from his fans. |
The advert is given a realistic and gritty feel so they haven’t used special effects as it would take away the realism, they have just used a lot of good editing techniques. |
This advert uses celebrity endrocement to help them sell this product, they have chosen to use 50 Cent, which is someone who is well suited to advertise this product as the trainers are his style of clothing, and the target audience which consist of teenage boys (mostly African American boys). |
They seem to present the product service using basic information like The reebok logo and basic website information; this is a huge global brand so their company is instantly recognisable. |
Form | This advert is animated and is set in typical fantasy world, making it an anti-realist advert. |
Style | This advert is extremely imaginative, it’s been done as if it was inspired by a fantasy video game, which makes it extremely dramatic, but because the product being advertised is such a normal everyday product, the fantasy styled advert makes the advert almost parodic |
Codes And Conventions | Camera Angles And Shots: The advert is very cinematic, and has a lot of different camera angles, in the beginning there is mostly camera angles that expose the fantasy world that has been created, such as extreme long shots and worms eye views, but as the advert progresses we start to see camera angles and shots that expose the detail on the creatures and characters, like medium shots and close-ups. Iconography: The iconography of this advert is a fantasy world; the imagery is what we typically think of when we image a fantasy world, such as castles, dragons and exaggerated surroundings. Editing: A lot of editing has been used in this advert as it’s an animated advert. They have edited in background music, along with animated footage (which has been blended in extremely well). Lighting: The lighting in the advert stays consistently unrealistically bright and fire like, as if the sun were shining very close to the location. Sound: The sound in this advert is just as fantasied and exaggerated as the setting and theme, as it features computers generated sound of un existing creatures. Music: The music in this advert has been recorded to suit the action of the scene, the music also has a fantasy element to it, to match the song |
Computer Graphics | The advert is a three dimensional animation so the entire advert has been made using special effects. |
Techniques | This adverts objective is to make coke (a normal product that we see every day) look extra exciting and out of this world, they have achieved this by making this advert extremely fantasied. |

Form | This advert is made to attract a young audience, which I why they have made it funny and upbeat. |
Style | The style of this advert is humours, young, fun and hip-hop, the celebrity in the advert was one that was famous at the time for being a high profile rapper so they made him rap about the product, which give it the street style. |
Codes And Conventions | Camera Angles And Shots: There are not a lot of camera angles in this advert, but there are a lot of shot types, the four main ones are medium-shot, long-shot, close-up shot and extreme close-up shot. These shots are used to expose the product and the celebrity endorser. Iconography: This advert consists of the celebrity endorser and a white plain background, but there is still that hip-hop old school colour flair because of the bright costume. Editing: With the editing, there are a lot of different cuts put into one sequence; this makes this advert more exciting and lively as you see such things as costume changes. Lighting: The lighting is bright and plain, which is done to show off the costume and product. Learning Outcome - 1
There are a number of different purposes for adverts, though we might find them intrusive, they play a very important role in the way the modern society functions. The main purpose of adverts is to inform and project information to the public, whether this is information about a product such as:
L'Oreal Commercial: this is a commercial that is adverting a product.
NSPCC Commercial:This is an advert, informing you of something
These are both advertising, but their advertising for very different purposes, as one is advertising the product to inform you of it, giving you information about the product, like where you can find it, what it does and why you should buy it, as other commercials such as the NSPCC commercial, is advertising awareness of a certain situation, informing you of about the situation and what you can do about it.
Advertising makes the world go round in this modern era, without advertising, the public wouldn't be aware of these products, therefore these companies would find it extremely hard or near impossible to sell these products, which would mean that these companies wouldn't be in business and a lot of current employment wouldn't exists.
The importance of advertising can be seen on the amount of money that is spent of advertising per year, It has been suggested that over $400 billion has been spent worldwide on advertising in 2011, this is due to the main fact that advertising is crucial to a companies success, as So many companies rely on advertising these days to build a connection with their audience and to create competition with their rival firms and boost sales of their products or services.
According to http://advertising.blurtit.com/q399143.html, Advertising gives companies and businesses the opportunity to build up a brand and an identity. A recent example of this having great success is with the Apple brand. The distinct adverts in both TV and Print form are instantly recognisable as the company's own and give it an identity as a clean, modern and reputable brand. Advertisements need to relate to current trends and sell both a product individually as well as the company as a whole. If an advertisement succeeds at both it can help draw an audience to the product or service and build a relationship between the consumer and company. Establishing this connection should lead to a boost in sales for the business.
